Age of Empires 4 is still a slower RTS with focus on building an economy like the original AoE 2 and decision making is much more important than APM in comparison to other RTS.īut they did speed up gameplay and streamline the experience: I love both games, it shouldn't be this or that, I keep playing both regularly :)įor me, AoE4 is a modern reinterpretation of the original formula. Its the perfect sweetspot in my opinion.Ī lot to argue in favor of aoe2 as well, its legacy speaks for itself. Yet you still get just enough time to explore the map, your opponent, and do interesting things and make important decisions. I feel like things happen a bit quicker and the flow of the game is somewhat better than in aoe2. Just the correct amount of time to go from dark to feudal age, feudal can be more aggressive or game deciding than in aoe2. I feel the "timing" spent on each age in aoe4 is top notch. watching Viper quickwalling is fun but I don't like that mechanic when Im playing myself, personal take again :D Again, matter of opinion here, but I like having more focus on decision making rather than microing mini tasks or pullingup a 0.1ms wall to stop a charging knight against my villagers. If figuring and following a changing meta is something you like, its definitely worth picking. Aoe2 meta still changes with updates, but not to that extent. A lot of updates refresh the meta, new civs, new maps, new balance change - All make it a fun little puzzle you can put your own input to. This is my personal opinion here but I like to see the meta still evolving and being figured. Not every map can work for any civ but it is definitely a fun thought experiment to tackle which keeps me entertained and provokes thoughts and creativity even after doing it nonstop for a year.

There is much more thought around maps, how to balance civs and how to play them. Yet in aoe4, any map is played completely different with every civ matchup. Maps!!! I love making maps for aoe4, in aoe2 every civs play similar when on the same map. This increases the importance of scouting, and makes counter play more intuitive and interesting. Age up is done by building one of two landmarks for any civ, which affects how your civ will play out during the game. There is much more "content" in each civ than in aoe2, yet less civs overall. Civilizations are more asymmetric, more unique units and unique playstyles that fit the identity of the civ. Here is what I love about aoe4 compared to aoe2: I am a huge fan of both aoe2 and aoe4, still actively playing and modding both on a daily basis.
